This time of year the roadsides are bright yellow with flowering broom bushes. Although they're an introduced invasive species I find them beautiful. The other day I set out to gather a basket of broom flowers from along the roadside. The occasional driver slowed down to stare, no doubt wondering what this woman in a broad brimmed hat was doing stuffing broom flowers into a cereal box tied around her neck.
It was slow work as I tried to pick just the flowers and not the leaves. But it was well worth it for the beautiful yellow I got and the lovely green from overdyeing with indigo. I did a strong bath with 2 parts plant material to one part fabric and fibre. The silk ribbon and fibres were dyed in the exhaust bath.
I've done resist dyeing with chemical dyes before but not with natural ones. For the patterned piece I folded the yellow wool fabric, pinned it with clothes pegs and then dipped it in my indigo vat. I was already addicted to dyeing but after trying this there's no hope for me!
